What Is eCPM?

eCPM stands for "effective Cost Per Mille" and represents the revenue a publisher earns per 1,000 impressions, regardless of the billing model used by the advertiser. While CPM measures what advertisers pay, eCPM measures what publishers earn. This distinction is critical for anyone running a website, app, or YouTube channel that generates advertising revenue.

The basic eCPM formula is:

eCPM = (Total Revenue / Total Impressions) × 1,000

For example, if your website generates $250 in ad revenue from 100,000 impressions, your eCPM would be ($250 / 100,000) × 1,000 = $2.50. This means you earn $2.50 for every 1,000 page views or ad impressions served.

eCPM vs. CPM: What Is the Difference?

The difference between eCPM and CPM comes down to perspective:

Key Insight: A publisher's eCPM will almost always be lower than the advertiser's CPM because the difference is captured by ad networks, exchanges, and intermediaries. For example, an advertiser might pay a $10 CPM, but after platform fees and revenue sharing, the publisher might see an eCPM of $5.50 (with YouTube's 55% revenue share to creators).

eCPM Formulas for Different Billing Models

Not all ads are billed on a CPM basis. Many advertisers pay per click (CPC) or per acquisition (CPA). Publishers can still calculate their effective CPM for these models using the following formulas:

For CPC-Based Campaigns

eCPM = CTR × CPC × 1,000

Where CTR is the click-through rate (as a decimal) and CPC is the cost per click. For example, if your CTR is 2% (0.02) and the CPC is $0.50, then eCPM = 0.02 × $0.50 × 1,000 = $1.00.

For CPA-Based Campaigns

eCPM = Conversion Rate × CPA × 1,000

Where Conversion Rate is the percentage of impressions that result in a conversion (as a decimal) and CPA is the cost per acquisition. For example, if your conversion rate is 0.5% (0.005) and CPA is $20, then eCPM = 0.005 × $20 × 1,000 = $10.00.

How eCPM Is Used in Ad Bidding

eCPM is the universal metric that ad exchanges and header bidding platforms use to compare bids across different billing models. When a user loads a webpage, the ad exchange receives bids from multiple advertisers - some bidding on a CPM basis, others on CPC or CPA. The exchange converts all bids to eCPM to determine which ad wins the auction. The advertiser with the highest eCPM wins the impression, regardless of their original billing model.

This is why understanding eCPM is essential for publishers. It allows you to compare the true revenue-generating power of different ad networks, demand sources, and monetization strategies on an apples-to-apples basis.
